Obverse description Frontal facing bust of Emperor Theophilos, crowned and short-bearded, clad in imperial loros with jewelled decoration visible at the lower field. The emperor holds a cross potent in his right hand. The surrounding legend reads ΘΕΟΦΙΛΟS in Greek characters distributed around the periphery of the flan, characteristic of the Syracuse mint style with its distinctive open, widely-spaced lettering.
