Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Philippicus Bardanes, depicted full-face in the hieratic Byzantine imperial style, wearing a jewelled crown and loros, the elaborately decorated imperial vestment rendered in fine chased detail. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand and a sceptre or eagle-tipped staff in his left, both emblems of sovereign authority. The facial features are rendered with a short beard and curled hair falling to the sides, conveying a stylised imperial dignity characteristic of early eighth-century Constantinopolitan die-cutting. A circular beaded border frames the effigy, with the imperial legend arranged around the periphery in majuscule Latin characters.
