| Beschrijving keerzijde | A large cross potent on three steps occupies the central field, a design derived from the standard Byzantine cross-on-steps reverse type established in the seventh century. The crossbar is embellished with pendant decorative elements, and the entire composition is rendered in a bold, somewhat provincial style consistent with the Syracuse mint. A beaded border encircles the design, and the Christological legend is distributed in abbreviated form around the periphery of the field, invoking the triumph of Christ as divine sanction for imperial authority. |
