Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Nikephoros I, rigidly facing, draped in imperial chlamys and wearing a jewelled crown. The emperor holds a cross potent in his right hand and an akakia in his left, presented in the formal hieratic style typical of middle Byzantine coinage. The effigy is rendered in low relief with stylised facial features characteristic of the early 9th-century Constantinople mint. A circular legend in pseudo-Latin characters runs along the coin's border, identifying the emperor by name and title.
