The figure holds in its right hand a long staff surmounted by a Staurogram (a Tau-Rho monogram, an early Christogram predating the Chi-Rho in coinage use), and in its left hand a globus cruciger, symbolizing divine authority over the Christian world. The exergue bears the standard Constantinopolitan mint mark CONOB, denoting refined gold struck at Constantinople. The reverse legend VICTORI-A AVGG flanks the angel, with an officina letter appearing as part of the mintmark. BCV#480 introduces a variant with the letter T in the right field. |

Mauricius Tiberius inherited a treasury nearly bankrupted by his predecessor Tiberius II, who had famously distributed gold to the populace with a generosity the state could not sustain. The new emperor responded with unpopular austerity measures — cutting military pay by a quarter in 588 — which triggered a mutiny on the Danube frontier and nearly toppled his reign before the Persian wars had even concluded.
His reign ended in 602 when the centurion Phocas led that same disgruntled soldiery on Constantinople. Mauricius and his sons were executed on the shore of the Bosphorus.
