Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Justinian II, depicted beardless with a large, stylized face characteristic of late 7th-century Byzantine imperial portraiture. The emperor wears a crown adorned with a cross (corona crucigera) and is draped in the imperial chlamys. In his right hand he holds a globus cruciger, the orb surmounted by a cross, symbolizing Christian imperial authority. The obverse legend is arranged around the bust in late antique majuscule lettering. The overall style reflects the hieratic, frontal conventions of Byzantine coin engraving of the first reign of Justinian II.
