Gratian's reign ended violently in 383 when Magnus Maximus, proclaimed emperor by the British legions, crossed into Gaul and effectively cornered him. Gratian was abandoned by his own troops near Paris and killed at Lugdunum on August 25th. The CONCORDIA AVGGG reverse type — invoking harmony among three co-emperors — was therefore struck during a period of increasingly strained relations between Gratian, his younger brother Valentinian II, and Theodosius I, making the piety of the legend somewhat aspirational in practice.
Constantinople mint production under Gratian is catalogued under RIC IX with relative precision; the 44a designation distinguishes this issue by officina and obverse type within a tightly sequenced series.
