Obverse description Frontal crowned bust of Empress Irene, facing, wearing a jewelled crown surmounted by a cross and adorned with pendilia falling to the shoulders, clad in elaborately jewelled imperial loros. She holds a patriarchal cross potent in her right hand, while a small cross on globe appears to the left of the effigy. The legend IRIhH AΓOVSTI flanks the bust in the fields, rendered in a mixed Greek-Latin script characteristic of late 8th-century Byzantine coinage.

Reverse description Frontal crowned bust of Emperor Constantine VI, facing, wearing a jewelled crown surmounted by a cross and displaying short pendilia, clad in imperial military chlamys decorated with a jewelled clasp at center. A small cross appears to the left in the field. The surrounding legend COhStAhtIhOS bAS reads in mixed Greek-Latin majuscules around the periphery, identifying the emperor by name and title, consistent with the hieratic portrait style of middle Byzantine numismatic art.
