| Obverse description | Christ Pantokrator enthroned facing, depicted in full Byzantine imperial style, wearing nimbus cruciger and robes, raising his right hand in benediction while holding a Gospels book in his left. The throne is elaborately rendered with jewelled footrest. A circular legend surrounds the central effigy, reading + IhS XRS RЄX-RЄϚNANTIЧm, identifying Christ as 'King of Kings' in the characteristic abbreviated Greek of the period. The style is characteristic of late Macedonian-era die engraving, with bold, stylised facial features and deeply struck drapery folds. |
