Carl XIV Johan — born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a French general under Napoleon — was elected Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810 and never learned Swedish, governing through translators until his death in 1844. This small copper denomination was a workhorse of the Riksbank's banco system, a parallel currency framework that ran alongside the riksdaler specie and created chronic public confusion over exchange rates throughout the 1830s and 1840s.
The banco system was abolished in 1855, just over a decade after this issue ceased production.
