Carl XIV Johan — born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a French marshal under Napoleon — became king of Sweden in 1818 without speaking a word of Swedish, a deficiency he never fully corrected. The fractional skilling banco denominations issued under his reign were tied to the banco system administered by the Riksbank, a parallel monetary framework that coexisted uneasily with the riksgälds notes issued by the state debt office. The resulting dual-currency confusion was a source of chronic commercial friction throughout his reign.
The KM#640 type spans nearly a decade of production across multiple dies, and minor typographic variations in the date punching are known within the series.
