| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse features the crowned royal cipher of King Carl XIV Johan, composed of an intertwined 'C' and 'XIV' beneath a royal crown. Flanking the monogram on either side and below are the three crowns of Sweden, a traditional heraldic symbol of the realm. The king's personal motto is inscribed in a divided legend above the monogram, interrupted by the tip of the crown. The lettering 'FOLKETS KÄRLEK MIN BELÖNING' arcs around the upper field, accompanied by the abbreviated royal designation 'C XIV'. The design is rendered in a clean neoclassical style characteristic of Swedish coinage of the early nineteenth century. |

Carl XIV Johan — born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a French marshal under Napoleon — became king of Sweden in 1818 without speaking a word of Swedish, a deficiency he never fully corrected. The fractional skilling banco denominations issued under his reign were tied to the banco system administered by the Riksbank, a parallel monetary framework that coexisted uneasily with the riksgälds notes issued by the state debt office. The resulting dual-currency confusion was a source of chronic commercial friction throughout his reign.
The KM#640 type spans nearly a decade of production across multiple dies, and minor typographic variations in the date punching are known within the series.
