The Whaddon Head type takes its name from the Whaddon Chase hoard, discovered in Buckinghamshire in 1849, which contained several hundred examples and remains one of the largest Iron Age silver hoards ever found in Britain. The Catuvellauni, whose territory centered on modern Hertfordshire, were among the most politically dominant tribes in pre-Roman Britain — Cassivellaunus, who led the resistance against Caesar's second expedition in 54 BC, is generally identified as a Catuvellaunian ruler. These units circulated in the decades immediately following that conflict.
