Beschrijving keerzijde A mounted warrior advancing to the right, armed with a spear held aloft, rendered in the schematic Celtic artistic tradition. The inscription VERI CA appears divided above and below the horse, constituting a partial rendering of the royal name Verica. The design is contained within a pellet border consistent with Atrebatic silver unit coinage of the early 1st century AD.

Aanvullende informatie

Verica ruled the Atrebates in the decades immediately before the Claudian invasion of 43 AD, and his expulsion by the Catuvellauni under Caratacus and Togodumnus was the political pretext Rome used to justify that invasion. His appeal directly to the emperor Claudius gave Rome its casus belli. This coin was struck during that charged period, when the Atrebates were already a client kingdom with deep Roman commercial ties — a dependency visible in the Romanized Latin on Verica's coinage, highly unusual among British tribal issues.
