Contemporary counterfeits of Iceni fractional coinage are well-documented in the archaeological record and were almost certainly produced within the tribe's own territory — possibly with tacit acceptance, given how tightly the Iceni controlled their monetary output in the decades before the Roman conquest. A silver-plated bronze core passing at this weight would have been difficult to detect without cutting or filing, particularly at the small module of a half unit.
The Ecen Mini Ece series dates to the final pre-conquest generation of Iceni coinage, issued as Roman pressure on client kingdoms intensified under Caligula and into Claudius's reign.
