Verica ruled the Atrebates in the decades immediately before the Claudian invasion of 43 AD, maintaining close ties with Rome — his expulsion by a rival, possibly Caratacus or Epaticcus, is cited by Cassius Dio as one of the direct pretexts Claudius used to justify the conquest.
