Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Leo III, depicted in frontal view with a crown surmounted by a cross and pendilia flanking the face. The emperor is shown with stylized features characteristic of late Byzantine silver coinage, wearing imperial loros or chlamys. A small cross or ornamental device appears to either side of the crowned head. The engraving is rendered in the crude, deeply struck hammered style typical of the Rome mint output of this period. No legend is present on the obverse.
