| Obverse description | Pearl-diademed and draped bust of Aelia Pulcheria facing right, rendered in three-quarter frontal view, with an elaborately dressed coiffure featuring a long plait swept upward along the back of the head and secured beneath the diadem. The empress is adorned with a necklace and earring, lending an air of imperial dignity to the effigy. The circumferential Latin legend reads AEL PVLCH-ERIA AVG, identifying the Augusta in the standard court titulature of the period. The portraiture reflects the hieratic, frontalizing tendencies characteristic of fifth-century Eastern Roman official coinage. |
