Issued by the municipality of Bunnik in 1997 to mark the Romeinenjaar — a regional commemoration of the Roman limes frontier that once ran directly through what is now the Utrecht area. The limes of the Lower Rhine formed the northeastern boundary of the Roman Empire for roughly three centuries, and Bunnik sits on terrain that was actively garrisoned. These local municipal tokens, denominated in the invented unit "Limes," circulated during festival events tied to the commemoration rather than as legal tender.
