| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Gothic monogram of Juan I — an interlaced 'I' within an elaborate Gothic architectural frame — surmounted by a large royal crown with fleurs-de-lis finials. The monogram is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer border, separated from the central device by a plain raised rim, reading from the Psalms in reference to divine protection of the sovereign. |

| Reverse description | Quartered coat of arms of Castile and Leon displayed within a quadrilobe (four-lobed) inner border: the first and fourth quarters bear a triple-towered castle representing Castile, while the second and third quarters show a rampant lion representing Leon. A circular Latin legend naming the king runs along the outer border, separated from the central device by a beaded ring, typical of Castilian regal coinage of the late 14th century. |
