| Reverse description | Central device consists of a rectangular shield or tablet bearing the royal name inscription IO·III in the upper register and R·P·A in the lower register, the latter abbreviating the Latin formula for King of Portugal and the Algarves (Rex Portugalie et Algarbii). The tablet is surmounted by a royal crown flanked by foliate or scroll ornaments extending into the field. The overall design is enclosed within a beaded or rope border following the irregular contour of the hammered flan. Weak areas of strike are present, consistent with hammered copper coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. |
