Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed as five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern upon a plain cross, each shield charged with five bezants (quinas) in saltire formation, the whole set within a quatrefoil or interlaced circular frame. Small annulets appear at the cardinal points of the frame. The design fills the central field within an inner beaded circle, and is enclosed by the circular legend in uncial characters. This arrangement of the quinas represents the traditional arms of Portugal as adopted on royal coinage throughout the medieval period.
