This quadrans belongs to a small series of aes struck under Augustus by the tresviri monetales — the board of three mint magistrates whose abbreviated title, A A A F F, appears in the field. The magistrates responsible for this issue, Messalla and Gallus, held the position in 5 BC. Augustus had revived the tresviri system after decades of civil-war-era monetary disruption, partly to restore the appearance of Republican institutional normalcy while keeping actual monetary policy firmly under imperial control.
The S C on quadrantes of this period reflects senatorial authority over the bronze coinage, a convention maintained throughout the Julio-Claudian period.
