Struck during the third and final year of the Bar Kokhba Revolt, this prutah belongs to a coinage program that was entirely deliberate in its political messaging — the rebels overstruck existing Roman provincial bronzes, a practical necessity given they controlled no mint infrastructure. The host coin is frequently visible beneath the new design, and identifying the undertype can help narrow the striking location, though no fixed mint has ever been confirmed for this series.
Simon bar Kosevah's Year Three issues are considerably scarcer than Year One and Year Two pieces. The revolt collapsed in 135 CE when Hadrian's forces took Betar, ending Jewish autonomy in Judea for centuries.
