Frederick the Fair's claim to the Duchy of Styria was itself contested — his reign overlapped with one of the most turbulent succession disputes in Habsburg history, culminating in his defeat at the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322 against Louis IV of Bavaria, after which he was held prisoner for several years. Coinage from Graz continued during his captivity, struck under the authority of his brother Leopold I.
CNA D82 is among the thinner bracteate-influenced pfennigs of the Styrian sequence, produced at a moment when the mint at Graz was consolidating regional output away from smaller local striking centers.
