Albert I ruled Styria as Duke following the Habsburg consolidation of the duchy after the Battle of Marchfeld in 1278, which ended Ottokar II of Bohemia's control over the region. These bracteate-style pfennigs were struck at the Graz mint during a period when Habsburg administration was still establishing fiscal infrastructure across newly acquired Austrian territories. Regional die-cutting quality varied considerably across the issue's long run, and specimens from different phases of the 1290–1308 span can show marked differences in flan preparation.
