Additional information

Fribourg's late medieval pfennig issues fall within the period when the city was consolidating its independence within the Swiss Confederation, having joined in 1481. Municipal billon coinage of this type circulated alongside issues from Bern and other neighboring authorities, creating a patchwork of small denominations that local merchants were obliged to accept at negotiated rates.
