| Obverse description | Facing gorgoneion rendered in high relief, occupying the full field of the flan. The apotropaic mask displays a broad, frontally presented visage with wide-set eyes, a flattened nose, and an open mouth from which a trilobed tongue protrudes prominently. Prominent teeth are visible flanking the tongue, and the head is surmounted by a mass of stylized serpentine hair. The treatment is characteristically archaic-transitional in style, with bold, deeply modeled features consistent with Himeran bronze coinage of the late fifth century BC. |
