| Obverse description | Facing crowned bust of William I, depicted in a schematic Anglo-Norman style, wearing a jewelled crown with a central cross finial. The king holds a sceptre surmounted by a cross to the left and a second sceptre to the right, giving this issue its type name. The effigy is enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a beaded border and an outer legend in Latin capital letters. The portrait displays the characteristically broad, stylised facial treatment typical of Conquest-era hammered coinage. |
