The geometric interplay of the quadrilateral and floriated cross is characteristic of the Quadrilateral on Cross Fleury type of Henry I. Small pellets or annulets appear in the angles of the cross. The Quadrilateral on Cross Fleury type belongs to the final decade of Henry I's reign, issued following one of the most brutal monetary reforms in English history. In 1125, Henry had the moneyers summoned to Winchester at Christmas, where — according to the chronicler John of Worcester — virtually all of them were mutilated, losing their right hands and being castrated, as punishment for producing underweight and debased coin. The type you are looking at was struck in the immediate aftermath of that purge.
