| Obverse description | Central field features the Portuguese royal arms — a shield displaying the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) surmounted by a crown — rendered in relief with characteristic hammered workmanship. The shield is set within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a beaded outer border. The circumferential Latin legend reads IOANNES.III.DG.PORT.ET.ALGARBIORVM, identifying the issuer as João III, King of Portugal and the Algarves, by the Grace of God. The flan is broad and irregular, typical of mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese copper coinage. |
