Additional information

Charles Robert of Anjou spent years fighting for his claim to the Hungarian throne after the Árpád dynasty died out in 1301, with rival claimants backed by powerful magnates contesting his rule well into the second decade of the century. These small silver issues belong to his early reign consolidation period, when minting activity itself was a political act — a demonstration of royal prerogative over a nobility that had effectively been running autonomous monetary operations for years.
