Philippe I reigned for nearly half a century, yet his coinage is among the most poorly documented of any Capetian king — Ciani assigns no number to this type, and surviving examples are sparse enough that die linkage studies remain incomplete. The Paris mint during his reign operated under conditions of chronic feudal disruption; the king's excommunication by the Church in 1094 over his adulterous remarriage to Bertrade de Montfort did nothing to stabilize royal authority or mint output. At roughly half the weight of the denier it subdivided, this obole would have handled the smallest daily transactions in a monetized economy still heavily dependent on barter.
