The design, rendered in a crude but bold hammered style, presents a symmetrical arrangement of letters forming a royal cipher. A cross pattée surmounts the central device. The surrounding legend, reading + D-I DE REX PHILIPVS, identifies the issuing monarch as King Philip I of France, disposed around the periphery in Latin majuscules. The overall strike is slightly irregular, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period. |

Small decorative elements, possibly annulets or wedges, are placed in the angles of the cross. The whole is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend AVRELIANIƧ CIVITAƧ, rendered in Latin majuscules with the distinctive retrograde S (Ƨ) typical of this issue, identifies the mint city of Orléans. The hammered flan exhibits the characteristic irregular outline and uneven relief of 11th-century French feudal coinage. |
