Reverse description A plain cross occupies the central field, its four cantons each decorated with the letter S, arranged symmetrically to form a cross cantonnée of two S-forms, a device associated with the city of Orléans. The design is contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads AVRELIANIS CIVITA in Latin, identifying the mint city of Orléans (Civitas Aurelianensis). The coin is struck on an irregular flan with uneven edges, consistent with hammered billon production of the Capetian period.
