Obverse description Distorted Carolingian royal monogram occupying the central field, composed of interlaced letters derived from the Capetian tradition, enclosed within a plain inner circle and a beaded outer border. The monogram, a stylised cipher of the king's name, is rendered in low relief with angular, somewhat crude execution typical of 11th-century feudal coinage. The surrounding legend, beginning with a cross pattee, reads the king's name and title in degenerate Latin capitals. The overall design reflects the persistence of Carolingian iconographic conventions under the early Capetian monarchy.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering ✠ PHLRXREX-I
