Reverse description The reverse presents a plain cross with equal arms at the center of an inner circle, a design derived from the standard Carolingian monetary type. The cross divides the inner field into four quarters, each plain. An outer legend band, bordered by a ring of annulets or pellets, carries the inscription ✠ ΛNDECΛVIS CIVITΛS ('City of Angers'), identifying the issuing mint. The lettering is rendered in the angular, somewhat irregular uncial script typical of late Carolingian provincial coinage, with the characteristic use of reversed or stylized letterforms.
