Obverse description Within a plain inner circle, a stylized bird (likely a dove or eagle) is depicted in the central field, rendered in the crude but characteristic Carolingian hammered style. Above the bird, a small cross pattée is visible, accompanied by pellets or small stars arranged around the central motif. The surrounding legend, separated from the inner circle by a band of annulets or pellets, reads ✠ GRΛTIΛ D-I REX ('By the Grace of God, King'), referencing King Eudes's royal title. The die workmanship reflects the provincial Angevin workshop style of the late 9th century.
