| Reverse description | The reverse displays the mint name PARISII CIVITAS (City of Paris) arranged in three horizontal lines across the field, reading PARIS / RISI / CIVI / TΛ, with a cross pattée or similar cross motif at the top and a terminal cross at the base. The legend is contained within a beaded border running along the coin's periphery. The lettering is executed in bold, angular Carolingian capitals, slightly irregular due to the hammered technique. This type of inscribed reverse identifying the mint city by its Roman name is characteristic of Carolingian and post-Carolingian coinage of the late ninth and early tenth centuries. |
