Obverse description Draped laureate bust of Emperor Louis I facing right, rendered in the Carolingian portrait tradition. The emperor's head is encircled by a laurel wreath, with visible drapery at the shoulder. The surrounding legend reads HLVDOVVICVS IMP, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The die work is characteristic of early 9th-century Carolingian hammered coinage, with bold if somewhat stylized facial features. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of hammered issues of this period.
