| Reverse description | The reverse displays the mint name of Lucca arranged in two horizontal lines across the field, reading VISTA / LEDCH, a contracted form of CIVITAS LUCA (City of Lucca). The bold, angular Carolingian letterforms fill the flan, with no additional decorative elements. The legends are clearly struck, though the irregular hammered flan results in some peripheral weakness. This type of reverse inscription, with the mint name presented in two lines, is characteristic of Carolingian deniers and obols struck at Italian mints during the reign of Louis the Pious. |
