Obverse lettering ✠ GRΛTIΛ D-I REX
(Translation: Charles, king by God`s grace.)
Reverse description The reverse presents a plain cross with equal arms occupying the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The quadrants formed by the cross arms each contain a small pellet, a design feature consistent with Carolingian mint practice of the period. The circular Latin legend AMBIANIS, identifying the Amiens mint, surrounds the beaded circle, introduced by a cross pattée. The overall design is characteristic of the standardized Carolingian monetary reform coinage, struck on an irregularly shaped hammered flan.
