Obverse description The obverse features the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles — a complex interlaced cipher composed of the letters of KAROLUS — prominently displayed in the central field, executed in the characteristic Carolingian style with interlocking strokes. The monogram is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A Latin legend, reading GRATIA D-I REX (Charles, king by the grace of God), surrounds the beaded circle, introduced by a cross pattée. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of ninth- and tenth-century Carolingian hammered coinage.
