Obverse description Within a plain inner circle, the royal name CAROLVS is inscribed in two lines across the field in bold, somewhat archaic Latin capitals, reading 'CARo' on the upper line and 'LVS' on the lower line. The lettering is characteristic of early Carolingian coinage, with individual letters showing the irregular, hand-cut quality typical of hammered silver issues of the period. The flat, unadorned field bears no effigy or additional decorative elements, conforming to the aniconic monetary tradition of Charlemagne's first coinage type. The coin's flan is irregular in shape, as expected of a hammered obol struck at a provincial mint.
