Andrew III, the last of the Árpád dynasty, ruled a kingdom already fractured by powerful magnates who had carved Hungary into semi-autonomous fiefdoms during the preceding decades. His death in 1301 without a male heir ended over three centuries of Árpád rule and triggered an immediate succession crisis that drew in the Angevins, the Přemyslids, and the Wittelsbachs simultaneously. Coins of his reign are accordingly scarce in any grade — the political instability that defined his eleven years on the throne was not conducive to consistent royal minting.
