Carthage operated as a semi-autonomous mint within the Byzantine administrative structure, producing these tiny fractions largely for local transactional needs in North Africa following Belisarius's reconquest of the Vandal kingdom in 533–534. The output was often irregular, and the Carthage mint's nummi show considerably more variation in fabric and module than contemporary issues from Constantinople.
At 0.6 grams, these circulated at the absolute base of the bronze denominational hierarchy — the smallest unit in daily exchange.
