Obverse description Facing right, the laureate head of Demeter is rendered in fine relief, adorned with a wreath of grain ears befitting her role as goddess of the harvest, and a triple-pendant earring. The magistrate's mark ΔAI appears in the lower field beneath the chin, serving as an engraver's or moneyer's signature. The portraiture displays the characteristic Italiote style of late fourth- to early third-century Metapontine coinage, with carefully articulated facial features and flowing hair. The incuse background is absent in this later series, distinguishing it from the archaic Metapontine tradition.
