Obverse description Head of Demeter facing left, rendered in fine high relief with sensitively modeled facial features. The goddess is adorned with an elaborate wreath of grain ears and foliage, her flowing hair cascading in wavy locks behind and below, with a spiral earring visible at the ear. The portraiture reflects the refined late Classical style characteristic of Metapontine coinage of the late 4th to early 3rd century BC. The fields are smooth and unlettered, with the entire design area dominated by the graceful bust.
