Obverse description Draped bust of Demeter facing left, her hair bound in a wreath of barley ears, conveying her identity as goddess of the harvest. She wears a triple-pendant earring, a detail rendered with fine Italiote craftsmanship typical of the period. The portrait is executed in high relief against a plain field, characteristic of Metapontine coinage of the late fourth and early third centuries BC.
