Metapontion's prosperity in the fourth and third centuries BC was tied almost entirely to grain — the city's agricultural hinterland in Lucania was among the most productive in Magna Graecia, and the nomos was essentially the commercial instrument of that wealth. When Pyrrhus of Epirus swept through southern Italy after 280 BC, Metapontion sided with him against Rome, a miscalculation that accelerated the city's terminal decline. Issues from the closing decades of this series were likely struck under increasing political pressure as Roman influence tightened across the region.
